Fire Regulations Europe: European fire classification

The classification standard EN 13501-1 ranks the construction materials in 7 classes with regard to their fire behaviour:A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F.

The same document also gives the classification of the product with regards to smoke development (s1, s2, s3) and the formation of flaming droplets/particles (d0, d1 and d2).

Fires tests for the ranking in classes, a total of 5 different test methods is used:

EN ISO 1182: Reaction to fire tests for building products - Non-combustibility test
EN ISO 1716: Reaction to fire tests for building products - Determination of the heat of combustion
EN 13823: Reaction to fire tests for building products - Building products excluding floorings exposed to the thermal attack by a single burning item
EN ISO 9239-1: Reaction to fire tests for floorings - Part 1: Determination of the burning behaviour using a radiant heat source
EN ISO 11925-2: Reaction to fire tests - Ignitability of building products subjected to direct impingement of flame - Part 2: Single-flame source test

Classification

Classification reaction to fire of construction products with the exception of floor coverings.

Class A1: EN ISO 1182 and EN ISO 1716
Class A2: EN ISO 1182 or EN ISO 1716 and EN 13823 (SBI)
Class B, C en D: EN 13823 (SBI) and EN ISO 11925-2
Class E: EN ISO 11925-2
Class F:Fire behaviour not determined

The classification of the product with regards to smoke development (s1, s2, s3) and the formation of flaming droplets/particles (d0, d1 and d2) is also determined:

Floor coverings, only the classification of the product with regards to smoke development is determined (s1, s2).

Class A1FL: EN ISO 1182 and EN ISO 1716
Class A2FL: EN ISO 1182 or EN ISO 1716 and EN ISO 9239-1

Class EFL: EN ISO 11925-2
Class FFL: Fire behaviour not determined

Floor coverings, only the classification of the product with regards to smoke development is determined (s1, s2).

Classification reaction to fire of linear tube products for thermal insulation

Class A1L: EN ISO 1182 and EN ISO 1716
