Fire Test to Motor Vehicle – European Directive: 95/28/EC

>> 95/28/EC Fire Test to interior material of motor vehicle

EC Directive 95/28/EC relates to “the burning behaviour of materials used in the interior construction of certain categories of motor vehicles”, and is intended to ensure that they meet fire safety standards.

95/28/EC fire test to interior material of motor vehicle to determine the Characteristic of Burning:

> Horizontal Burning Behaviour

> Vertical Burning Behaviour

> Burning Dropping

>> 95/28/ECFire Test to interior material of motor vehicle – Horizontal burning rate:

> Materials used for the upholstery of a seat and its accessories, for interior lining, for thermal and /or sound insulation and for light fittings must satisfy the requirements of this test.

> The time required for a flame to pass between the two measuring points (burning distance) or for it to extinguish after passing the first measuring point is recorded. If the flame extinguishes before it reaches the second measuring point then the burnt distance up to the point where the flame is extinguished is recorded. The sample passes the test if, on the basis of the worst result, the horizontal burning rate does not exceed 100 mm per minute or if the flame extinguishes before the last measuring point is reached.

>> 95/28/ECFire Test to interior material of motor vehicle – melting behaviour

> Materials used for the interior lining of the roof and adjoining parts must pass the drop test.

> If the sample ignites within the first 5 minutes of the test then the radiator is swivelled away after 3 seconds until the flame extinguishes. After the first 5 minutes or after the sample flame has extinguished the radiator is left in position, whether ignition takes place or not, for the remaining period. The sample passes the test if any drops generated fail to ignite the cotton wool 300 mm beneath the sample during any of the test performances.

>> 95/28/ECFire Test to interior material of motor vehicle – vertical burning rate

> Materials for curtains, blinds and similar hanging materials must satisfy the requirements of the testto determine the vertical burning rate of materials.

> The time from application of the flame to the severance of the three marker threads is measured. The maximum burning rate is used for calculation purposes. The sample passes the test given in Annex VI if, on the basis of the worst result, the vertical burning rate does not exceed 100 mm per minute
